My adopted city of Milwaukee, WI has had a quite spectacular city flag (look it up) since the 50s, and a 2016 redesign contest resulted in the winning “Sunrise Over the Lake” design by Robert Lenz, affectionately dubbed “The People’s Flag,” flown and emblazoned all over the city, but not (at least at time of release) officially adopted by the government. This shawl is inspired by that design and celebrates my love of flags.

This pattern uses a mix of garter and stockinette stitches with decreases on both ends to get the main shape. Then, stitches are picked up along the outside edge and knit out to create the sky arc. Knit it up in the People’s Flag palette or mix it up to create your own version of a sunrise shawl.

50% of sales will be donated to a Milwaukee area non-profit.
