Mercury is part of The Planets Collection - shawls inspired by the orchestral suite The Planets by Gustav Holst. The lace pattern used in this shawl is meant to evoke visions of The Winged Messenger as he speeds across the heavens. The sample was knit with Tartlet Sport from Kim Dyes Yarn in the Copper Penny colorway. The pattern works well with heavily variegated yarn, but would work equally well with solids, semi-solids, tonals, and gradients and can be knit in any weight yarn from fingering to aran. This pattern is relatively simple - the drama comes from the yarn. Hand dyed yarn is an excellent choice and the skeins don’t even need to match exactly. The sample uses two skeins in the same colorway, but one was a little darker than the other. While you can see the difference in the finished shawl they blend very nicely from one skein to the other and the effect is very harmonious.
