If you are looking to use up some small scraps, stash you don’t know what to do with, or perhaps some mini skeins or even this year’s Advent, this is the perfect project for you!

A knitted garter square blanket that can use either fingering, sport, or DK weight yarn. The squares are designed to use less than 5g and 20g, making it the ideal scrap- and stash-busting blanket as well as perfect for knitting advents and mini skeins. (There is also an extra 10g version for the sport weight. ) The smallest size uses around 120g of yarn (plus some contrast yarn for the borders)

You don’t have to decide on how big a blanket, or which colors look good together until the very end, making it low-stakes and mindless to cast on and knit.

It’s the perfect grab-and-go project, and in the end you can make it however big a blanket you like by crocheting together the squares; the layout options are endless, really, but the pattern includes illustrations for 4 layouts that you can print out and color in if you want to plan your layout in advance. It’s easy to add onto the blanket at a later date if you want to make it bigger.

If you keep making squares as a sort of palette cleanser between other projects with your scraps, it’s like getting a free baby blanket gift. When the occasion arises, you just crochet together some squares made previously, and voila it kinda feels like a free knitted gift!

The entire pattern is written out, in addition to a detailed video tutorial, to make it easy for both knitters and crocheters to understand all the steps, making it beginner-friendly.

It includes a bunch of tips and tricks for a polished look that can easily be applied to other projects.

For the truly scrappy crafter, the pattern also includes a tutorial for making a magic ball for the tiny scraps of yarns.
