I made a few scrunchies for my daughter with some sock yarn scraps I had, and I thought I would share my method for making scrunchies with the world. Knitting these in public, made me realize how polarizing scrunchies are…some people really hate them!

Apparently, scrunchies are making a fashion comeback this fall. So dig through your scraps and knit your own scrunchie. Wear it with pride.

You will need: 2.75 mm double pointed needles (gauge is not critical however), a hair elastic, some fingering/sock yarn scraps (20 to 30 grams is fine), a small quantity of waste yarn and a crochet hook for the cast on.

This pattern begins with a provisional cast on, then the scrunchie is knitted circularly over a hair elastic using 2.75 mm double pointed needles. Finally the live ends are grafted together.

I made three different scrunchies with different quantities of yarn. More yarn obviously makes a fuller scrunchie. I hope you enjoy!
