The Tourist Shawl was inspired by my upcoming summer visit to Sicily. I am certain this fluffy, soft garment will be my favorite trip accessory.
I challenged myself to design a durable, lightweight shawl – small enough that it I could easily slip into or tie onto my carry-on bag, yet still large enough to keep me warm or protect me against the sun and Mediterranean wind.
I envision myself wearing it while enjoying Palermo markets, viewing the Etna volcano or climbing Monte Pellegrino. (Goethe described Monte Pellegrino as the most beautiful promontory in the world). I’ll also wrap myself in it while knitting my new shawl and enjoying the Sicilian sunsets. This asymmetric triangle shawl is the ideal spring and summer accessory for chilly evenings, whatever the occasion.

The Tourist Shawl is a sideways, asymmetrical shawl which begins with just a few stitches at one tip and grows to its widest point, featuring a leafy brioche motif that will look great in any yarn weight. The pattern is easily adjusted to any size by simply adding or reducing repeat sections. The entire shawl is worked in an easy and meditative back and forth brioche stitch pattern.
It might be one of the easiest and fastest brioche shawls you’ll ever knit! The stitch pattern is intuitive, simple to memorize and relaxing to knit.
The pattern is filled with detailed explanations and lots of video links that show all the stitches and helpful hints. It’s also pleasant to knit since there is no need to count the stitches on every row. Just offset your favorite solid or variegated yarn on one side with a contrasting background color on the other. The result is like two different shawls because the fabric is completely reversible. Add a beautiful tassel if you wish (completely optional).

The pattern includes both charts and full written instructions.
Gauge is not so crucial for this design, but if your gauge differs from the pattern gauge, the dimensions of your shawl will be different as well. The pictured shawl was made with lace weight yarn, but the pattern can easily be worked in fingering or sport weight yarn too.

YARN: Malabrigo Lace (Lace weight)
50 grams/1.76 ounces – 430 meters/470 yards, 100% Merino wool
YARN CONSUMPTION:
MC yarn: exactly 1 skein (50gr/1.76 ounces –430m/470yds) Malabrigo Lace colorway Applewood (018) .
CC yarn: exactly 1 skein (50gr/1.76 ounces – 430m/470yds) Malabrigo Lace colorway Pearl Ten (069) (including tassel yarn).
Or use any other lace weight yarn.
Note that if you use different weight yarn or different needle size, the yardage, weight and dimensions of your shawl may differ from mine.

NEEDLES: 3.00mm/US 2 ½, 100cm (40“) circular needle, or size needed to get right gauge.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Wingspan: Approx. 162 cm / 64“
Depth at widest point: 76 cm / 30“
Measurements taken from relaxed fabric after blocking.

OTHER TOOLS: Tapestry needle; scissors; blocking tools (wires and pins)

GAUGE: 22 sts x 26 rows = 10cm / 4“ in two-color brioche stitch pattern after blocking.
Needle sizes are recommendations only. Always use the needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (to save your time). (My personal knitting tension is tight).
