Construction
This hat is a cross between an aviator and deerstalker hat. It is a unisex design that fits snug to the head and allows for up to three different wear styles (open, tied below chin, and tied on top). The fit overall is meant to be closer to the head than traditional trapper hats, that are often larger and more oversized. Think of it as a “mini” trapper hat.

It is constructed as three flat, separate panels that are then seamed together. The hat is knit in a double striping pattern using two different color yarns of worsted/bulky weight, with optional mohair. You can either hold a single color strand of mohair throughout (adding it each time you switch colors), use two different mohair skeins (one per bulky yarn color), or add mohair to only one of the bulky weight yarns. Feel free to knit in multiple colors or just one, but the pattern is written assuming the double stripe pattern will be followed.

Sizes
Fits most adolescents/adults. Depending on chosen yarn, each size accommodates 20”-24” head circumferences.

  • Size One (extra small - small)
  • Size Two (medium - large)

While you are free to use whatever yarn/needle size combination to match gauge, it is best to use the recommended yarn to achieve the same look seen in the model photography. Both recommended yarns have an ample amount of stretch, allowing for more size accommodation. Knitting with tighter tension/using yarns with less stretch may result in a smaller hat. Please do a gauge swatch BEFORE knitting and size up needles/yarn if needed.

Yarn Recommendations
Worsted/Bulky (main yarn):

  • Woolstok by Blue Sky Fibers in 2 different colors, 50g each approx 123yd/112m (100% Fine Highland Wool)
  • Pishkun by The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers in 2 different colors, 50g each approx 128yd/117m (100% rambouillet)

The above are recommendations; Use any bulky/worsted yarn and needles that will match gauge.
