The Waves
Description
The Waves is a double or single-wrap infinity cowl with all-season wearability. Dress it up or dress it down - try it in mohair, merino, silk, or your favorite blend.
Soothing no-purl stockinette is paired with an easily memorized 2-row lace repeat. It’s perfect for gifting (to yourself or others!), and is very travel-friendly as both a project and finished garment. It’s also a “one-skein wonder” for the average lace weight skein - perfect for that one variegated beauty you just couldn’t pass up at your local yarn shop.
The Waves is knit in the round using a long-tail cast on. We knit one row of 1x1 ribbing, then knit around, placing our second marker to denote the end of the lacework section.
We work around and around in one part stockinette and one part lace, until we reach our desired width of the cowl (16” as written, or go until you run out of yarn for a cozier version). We then repeat the 1x1 ribbing row, and BO knitwise.
If you have never done much lace knitting before, this is a great introduction! Know that we want to keep our tension a little looser when handling the lace stitches, as it will help the fabric definition and be significantly easier to work with. A variegated yarn really shows off the beauty of the stitch, and can help with visibility - the slipped stitch we pass over is often easier to spot in variegated yarn.
You can make the lace section as big or as small as you want, as long as you keep it in increments of 3 + 2. There is a tipping point structure-wise and lengthwise if you include too much lace (the structure will be more loose, and the length will grow a bit the more lace you add), but if you like that look and enjoy more lace, go for it!
Sample 2 is knit with 77 stitches dedicated to the lace section (75+2=77), while Sample 1 is knit with 125 stitches in lace (123+2=125). The pattern is written to Sample 1’s specs.
