The Wilson Hat
The pattern is named after my art teacher, since I designed a hat with matching mittens as their Christmas gift. The matching mitten pattern is currently in my Ravelry Store!
While this hat may appear challenging, it is ideal for the adventurous novice knitter - making it a perfect quick winter gift. The detailed slip stitch columns form the stunning crown decreases which is the centerpiece of this design.
This pattern includes both a chart and written instructions for the crown decreases, making your hat-knitting experience as comfortable as the hat’s folded cuff!
Yarn:
2 colours of DK, sport, or even heavy fingering weight yarn, about 230 yards of the MC, and 85 yards of the CC. Most yarns from fingering to light worsted will do fine for this pattern, as long as you are achieving the recommended gauge, to not alter the size of the finished hat.
Gauge:
26 sts = 4”/10cm OR 6.5 sts = 1”/2.5cm in garter st in the round.
Round gauge is not as important as st gauge. To adjust the size of your hat, you can modify your gauge accordingly.
Sizes: Written in one size, but can be changed through adjusting needle size/yarn weight. While the size given in the pattern will comfortably fit most women’s head sizes, going up one needle size will likely fit most men, and going down one will fit most children. Finding an exact measurement for the hat is difficult, due to the folded cuff being extremely stretchy.
Needles:
3.5mm (US size 4) 16” circular needles,
& same size dpns or magic loop (or in size needed to obtain gauge).
