I’m delighted to have been given the task of designing some knitted items to celebrate the forthcoming visit to Scotland by a group of fibre artists from the United States…The Yarny Ewes…and have designed this headband as a tribute to the group and the two ewes from Olive & Two Ewe Studios, who have all been waiting patiently to be able to travel here.

The headband is reversible, with a flock of sheep amongst 2 borders of heather on the front and with Scots Pines on the reverse, also amongst a heather border. There is a contrasting picot trim at the top and bottom of the headband.

Both layers are knitted in the round, so there are no seams and only knit stitches are required. Double-pointed knitting needles or a circular knitting needle may be used to knit this headband. The pattern requires only 2 colours to be used at the same time. There are some long floats to the rear of the patterned front and back, but these become trapped inside the headband, so do not need to be caught up. Some experience of fair isle or stranded colour work would be useful for this pattern, although full instructions are given for the construction methods used and it would make an excellent first project in colour work.

Materials:
4 ply Soft Lambswool / Merino or equivalent (fingering weight):

Actual amounts used are listed below, but please use this as a rough guide only, given that different brands may differ slightly. The yardage of the yarn used: 215m/236yds per 50g.
Lilac: 33g Purple: 10g White: 10g Green: 8g Black: 4g

Knitting Needles:
One set of double-pointed 3.00mm knitting needles are suggested for knitting the headband. Alternatively, you may use a circular knitting needle of the same size and of length 60cm, if preferred.

Measurements (unstretched):
One size fits all: Circumference 21 inches (54cm) by depth 4 inches (10cm)

Tension:
Approximately 30 stitches and 38 rows to 10cm over the pattern.
