After many attempts to recreate the original wug that I made on a whim without thinking to write it down, I decided to take it apart and work backwards. I then realized it was a mess, and so I present to you all this much tidier version. It uses some techniques I learned by doing some amigurumi-style animals (magic ring, increasing patterns).

All you need are a few yards of two colors of yarn (preferably blue or red and something dark) with a matching hook, an embroidery/darning needle, and some extra yarn for stuffing. This pattern should work with any yarn, but it’s recommended to use a slightly smaller hook than normal so there aren’t big gaps, and a little bit of stretch helps. The wugs in the picture were made with aran weight yarn and a G/4mm hook. They measure approx. 5 inches at the widest part and 3.5 inches tall including legs.

Each one I make seems to come out differently depending on tension, stuffing, and embroidery. They also benefit from a little bit of adjustment to the edging and stuffing to get the shape you want. The eye and leg can go on either side to make them left- or right-facing.

Enjoy!
