I made this blanket for a Christmas Present. I love the on-the-go nature of making squares! This pattern is inspired by all the ammonite and bivalve fossils in my yard. There’s 120 million year old limestone on a hill behind my house poking out from the ground between the trees. New fossils regularly get washed out of the limestone with the spring rains, or you can find some just by flipping over a few rocks! They’re lovely to come across and a fun reminder of this land’s deep past.

I used 33.42 skeins of Premier Anti-pilling Everyday DK yarn in the colors Chartreuse (# 1107-67, 1 skein), Butter (# 1107-66, 2 skeins), White (# 1107-01, 2 skeins), Fern Green (# 1107-13, 2.9 skeins), Canary (# 1107-40, 4 skeins), Mustard (# 1107-56, 6.75 skeins), Navy (# 1107-39, 7.67 skeins), and Peacock (# 1107-15, 7.1 skeins) So, a total of 9,123.66 yards, or 3,342 grams. The finished size was about 84” square, or 7 ft x 7 ft, or 2.13 m x 2.13 m. I used a 3.5mm hook for almost all the work, and a 4mm hook to seam the squares.

This new pattern is more a record of what actions I have performed to make this blanket, and hopefully adequate to reproduce it yourself should you wish. I did not use testers or tech editors. It is free. I understand how lean these days can be. If you think this pattern sucks, or have questions or comments, suggestions, or whatever else, my email is TexasCrochetDesigns@gmail.com

You might need to search for and watch an overlay mosaic crochet tutorial on YouTube first if you’ve never used that technique before. This pattern could be done by an adventurous beginner, as long as you know the anatomy of stitches and the types of stitches listed below.

My apologies go out to the more visually inclined as I will not be providing charts along with the written pattern. In the making of this blanket, I did not draw up many of the figures in it, and therefore don’t have them for you to reference, either.
