A lovely dense double fabric ideal for potholders. I have used cotton because I think it washes like a rag and is not as slippery as wool could be. Use any 8 ply though. It is an amazing stash, in my opinion.
Once you have made one, it will be super easy up size or downsize it.

They make lovely traditional gifts for house warming parties. Add a couple of yummy goods for the kitchen and you have a wonderful gift.
