This pattern is for a garter-stitch boomerang-shaped shawl. The increase pattern creates a scalloped edge along one side. It can be adapted to be as large as you wish by adding more sections.

This shawl has become my go-to choice for any trips. It’s big enough to be a mini blanket on a cold train or airplane and small enough to throw in my backpack. It wraps well around my shoulders or under my coat. It has been a cozy and comforting companion. I’m rebranding it as the first of what may be many traveling shawl designs.

Originally, this shawl emerged from my fascination with how the spacing of increases can dramatically change the shape of the fabric you are creating. I was also trying to create a shawl that only uses the most basic stitches and techniques. There are no short rows or knit-front-back-front in order to create the shaping, only yarn-overs and knit-two-together.

I have included instructions in three different versions for knitters of all abilities. You may find it easier to jump between the different versions of the directions as you get more comfortable with the pattern. For example, the row-by-row instructions are useful for checking your stitch count at any time.

Materials and information:

• About 600 yards of worsted weight yarn. My sample was knitted with 3 skeins of Cascade 220 Superwash Effects (Shown in 11-Dried Flowers).
• Needles size: 7 (4.5 mm) or whatever you need to approximate gauge and a density you prefer
• Gauge after blocking in stockinette: 7 stitches = 2 inches. Exact gauge is not essential – swatch and block so you get a fabric that drapes well and feels cozy.
• Finished size is approximately 56” wide and 28” long at the triangle point.
