The Trembling Sweater is one of eleven engaging patterns from Marlisle: A New Direction in Knitting by Anna Maltz – a beautiful, 160 page, full-colour, litho-printed book packed with photographs, knowledge, anecdotes and opinion to introduce you to the technique of Marlisle. It features 22 interesting yarns from dedicated small-producers while celebrating the breadth of our knitting community. Available from www.annamaltz.com and friendly yarn shops around the world. Launch date 10 February, 2018.

A loose-fitting, but not oversized, lightweight sweater with full-length sleeves, Trembling is knitted in the round from the top down. To keep you cosy and warm, the striking, densely knitted yoke gives extra warmth across the shoulders where it is usually welcome. Almost imperceptible increases and start of round transitions are hidden in the diamonds to make for uninterrupted geometric patterning. You’ll also be hard pressed to find the short rows which run across the back and front of the shoulders to shape the round neckline for a superior fit. The intense yoke is balanced out by a soothingly simple stocking stitch body (worked straight) and sleeves (tapered at regular intervals) that are finished off by easy 2x2 ribbing to stop any chance of roll.

YARN
Yarn A:
Rosa Pomar, Mé Mé 20 (4ply/fingering (see note below);100% wool from the Serra da Estrela region of Portugal; 167m/183y per 50g/1¾oz)
Grey (2) x 6 (6, 7, 7, 7, 8)

Yarn B: Circus Tonic Handmade, Circus Single Ply (4ply/fingering; 100% Merino (machine washable); 366m/400y per 100g/3½oz)
Emerald City or Mallard x 1 (This will be plenty for sizes XS, S, M and L. For sizes XL and XXL, it will be enough, but the allowance is less generous.)

It is important to chose two yarns with a striking colour contrast. They need to be different enough in colour separately to create a clear third colour when used together, especially if you are using single ply yarns, which have a tendency to blend together more than multi ply yarn. Using two single ply yarns together has the benefit of reducing the bulk that can often come from densely spun 4ply/fingering weight yarns intended for sturdy use in socks and mittens.

While Mé-mé is referred to as a lace weight elsewhere, it is best to consider it a light 4ply/fingering weight in terms of substitution. Using the specified yarn at the given stocking stitch gauge will result in a loose stocking stitch; not so much as to be lacy, but not dense at all. This means you can substitute a slightly thicker yarn (which will give a slightly bulkier Yoke), but it is not recommended to go with a finer yarn. A true lace weight would certainly not fit the bill. Mé-mé comes in three different weights, so make sure you are looking at the right one.

GAUGE
24 stitches x 36 rounds = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” over stocking stitch in Yarn A only on larger needle after blocking. (Main gauge) (For Body and Sleeves.)
26 stitches x 34 rounds = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” over Marlisle Trembling stitch pattern in Yarn A and B on larger needle after blocking. (For Yoke)
24 stitches x 40 rounds = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” over 2x2 Ribbing in Yarn A on smaller needle after blocking. (For Cuffs and Bottom Ribbing.)
