Twiddle muffs are used in many dementia wards and care homes. The different textures of the yarn and accessories attached to the muff provide relief, stimulation and distraction to dementia patients.

This pattern provides instructions for a basic muff. You can then add all sorts of items to the inside and outside, such as buttons, ribbons, pom-poms etc. Add as many things as you like – the more the better as the variety of texture is what helps the dementia patients. The stitches described could be used in a different order for alternative effects.

Any yarn can be used with the appropriate sized hooks.

The main body of the piece is worked in Tunisian crochet. It is seamed together and borders are added to the two openings using standard crochet.

A knowledge of basic Tunisian crochet techniques and stitches (TSS, TKS and TPS) is required.
