Twinkle Stars Afghan
This trendy knit is a perfect “next-stage” project for beginners. If you already know the basic knit stitch, all you need to learn are short rows (abbreviated w&t and explained in the pattern). It’s easier than it sounds, and you’ll be ready to start in no time!
The lap afghan size can easily be customized by using different yarn weights, needle sizes, or by knitting more or fewer squares. Adding a border is optional- I used a crab stitch crochet border for a neat finish.
This knitting pattern is cosy and versatile. Using the Star motif instructions, knit as many motifs as you like and join them- not just for a lap afghan! You can create a poncho, scarf or a large afghan. Endless possibilities, endless cosy vibes!
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner with some skills.
Stitches used: k, w&t.
The pattern comes with written instructions, schematic, and photos.
TECHNIQUE: Star motifs are worked using garter st and short rows.
Also, you must know crab crochet st to work border, mattress, or any other sewing st for joining motifs.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Aran (worsted) weight yarn (or any yarn of your choice).
I used three contrasting shades of blue for the squares:
• Dark blue - 132g (12pcs).
• Blue - 121g (11 pcs).
• Turquoise - 132g (12 pcs).
I used yarn from my stash for the Stars and the border:
• One Star requires approx. 6g of yarn; the full project uses 210g from 8 different stash yarns.
• 35g of stash yarn for the border.
NOTE: If you substitute another yarn, please check gauge (tension) and yardage, and adjust accordingly.
• Circular needle 5.00mm (US 8) x 50cm.
• 1 Tapestry needle.
• 1 Crochet hook 3.50mm (US E/4) for border.
GAUGE (tension): Using 5.00mm (US 8) needles, work a tension square over garter st measuring 12 x 12cm (5 x 5 in). After blocking the gauge measures 18 sts and 32 rows = 10cm (4 in). NOTE: Gauge is not crucial for this pattern.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING (Actual size will depend on your gauge).
Lap afghan: 105 x 75cm / 41 ½ x 29 ½ in.
Small square: approx. 7 ½ x 7 ½ cm / 3 x 3 in.
Large square: approx. 15 x 15cm / 6 x 6 in.
