Using an easy-to-learn twisted rib stitch throughout, this hat is easy to make and creates a comfy, squishy texture that you will love to wear. Because it’s a ribbed hat, it’s very stretchy, so the sizing accommodates kids and adults, and the pattern works for men and women alike. Great with a pompom or without!

Two sizes - this hat is very stretchy:

  • Adult small will actually also fit most kids aged 6 and up. It has finished circumference of approximately 16”/ 40 cm and fits heads up to 22”/ 55 cm, with hat height 8.25”/ 20.5 cm
  • Adult large has finished circumference of approximately 18”/ 45 cm and fits heads up to 24.5”/ 61 cm, with hat height 9.5”/ 24 cm

Yarn: DK-weight yarn, approximately 80 (90) grams /175 (200) yards/ 160 (185) meters. The sample was made with Squoosh Fiberarts Ultra Dk in “Blue Lagoon.” This is a 100% merino yarn, but other fibers/ fiber blends would work well, including cotton and bamboo.
Solid/ tonal yarns will show the twisted pattern very well; speckles and gently variegated yarn can also work, but yarns with high contrast between colors may obscure the texture.

Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows to 4”/ 10 cm in stockinette stitch.

Needles: US 6/ 4.0 mm needles. This hat is worked in the round. 16”/ 40 cm circular needles were used for the sample; you will also need dpns as the number of stitches decrease for the crown, or a longer circular needle if you prefer the Magic Loop method.

Difficulty: Beginner. I would not recommend this for someone’s very first knitting project, but the pattern is beginner-friendly. The twisted stitch is not difficult to learn.

Pattern support: Designer email is included in the pattern in case you have questions.
