The Provinces of Ireland designs all use traditional Aran stitches. The cable stitch used in the Ulster cowl is probably the most common of Aran stitches, found in the majority of Aran jumpers. The cable represented the fisherman’s ropes, and the promise of good fortune and safety at sea.

This triangular cowl is knit flat, but uses some more advanced knitting techniques to produce the shape and fit. It is a good project to try out new techniques and is perfect for gift knitting.

The cowl is knit using Folklore Yarns “Faerie Folk” Donegal Tweed in the colours of the Ulster Coat of Arms, but could be knit in just one colour.

Yarn: Folklore Yarns Faerie Folk C1 & 2: 50g (120yds/110m) each OR if using just one colour 100g (240yds/ 220m)
* Any DK weight yarn can be substituted but be mindful of yardage.
The yarn used for the samples is Folklore Yarns Faerie Folk Donegal Mohair Tweed. C1: 2625 Crobh Dearg and C2: 2619 Far darrig. https://folkloreyarns.com/collections/faerie-folk-a-doneg...
The sample weighs approximately 75g.
