The Uncan hat features traditional Fair Isle patterns but takes a detour from traditional Shetland style with the addition of a gap in the crown for people with lots of curly hair or a pony tail who find it impractical to wear a normal beanie. In Shetland dialect anything unusual is known as “uncan” literally meaning strange or unknown!

The pattern is one size adult but the actual size can be changed quite dramatically using larger or smaller needle sizes.

Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting tends to be tight. I use UK metric 3mm needles which is a 2.5 equivalent in US sizes.

I have not tested this hat in any yarn other than 100% Shetland wool
