Union Jack Flag Blanket: Knit-A-Long (KAL) Part 1

This Union Jack was initially designed for a Yarn Bomb celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday. The end result is a simple yet effective striking piece that can be adapted for any purpose. Many different people will make squares or stripes for the yarn bomb, after which they will be sewn together as blankets for the homeless.

Any yarn or pattern could be used to create the squares or stripes, as long as your tension over that pattern/yarn weight works to 10cm/4cm square. If you are using a different yarn weight or pattern design you may need to have fewer/more stitches or rows, you will simply need to work it and measure/adjust until you have a 10cm/4 inch square.

As different people will be involved in the yarn bomb, all squares/stripes need to be the same size. If you are making the full flag yourself, you can choose what size squares to make.

The original throw was made using Red Heart Detroit DK, available from Yankee Yarns. For more info or to order, contact Sara: yankeeyarns@gmail.com

Part 2 of the KAL will feature making up the squares/stripes into a blanket, including joining techniques and borders.
