This sock design captures the essence of our time spent in the picturesque lakeside town of Vaidava, Latvia. During a relaxing knitting retreat, we embraced the tranquillity and cherished the close-knit relationships with our friends.

It’s the first cuff-down pattern in the series, but it still maintains its tradition with a sole gusset and a reinforced heel. The heel reinforcement goes to the bottom, and the resulting Dutch heel provides a perfect fit. There is no need for complicated short-row shaping or grafting of life stitches, as you’ll finish off with a delightful round toe.

Finished foot circumference:

  • 17.5 (20, 22.5) cm
  • 7 (8, 9)″

Gauge: 32 sts & 40 rows = 10 cm / 4″ in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.

Suggested needles: 2-2.25 mm (US 0-1) or the size needed to obtain gauge. Sharp circulars or DPNs for small circumference knitting.

Notions: Stitch markers, row counter, tape measure, removable stitch markers or bobby pins.

Techniques used: Tubular cast-on, knitting in the round, twisted stitches, cables, knit decreases.

Construction notes: These socks are knitted from the cuff down, starting with a Tubular cast-on. You’ll follow the cable chart all the way down to the top of the heel. For the heel, you’ll work a reinforced slip stitch heel flap flat and then turn it to create a Dutch heel. The gusset decreases are cleverly placed in the middle of the sole rather than on the sides. Finally, you’ll continue knitting the foot in the round, finishing with a round toe.
