This pattern was inspired by a lovely light Fortuny light fixture that illuminated the stairwell of the palazzo in Venice where my husband and I stayed.

This pattern is a bit more straight forward than it looks with most of the stitches being the usual suspects for increases and decreases.

While I used a handspun lace weight yarn of merino and tussah silk (50/50), any lace weight should work. I think it also would be fine in a heavier weight yarn.

There is a circular version of this shawl: Venetian Light Shawl: Circular.

My usual warning:
This pattern has not been tested knitted by anyone other than myself. Please let me know if you find any errors and I will post a new, corrected version.

Removed extra row 115 from chart 3a and chart 3b. New version of pattern has been posted.

Changed the formatting of repeats in charts 3a and 3b to be consistent with the other charts. Does not affect the actual knitting but hopefully makes the chart clearer.
