Vinho Verde

Sometimes a new design comes straight out of a previous favorite. Some of you may recognize the hem on Vinho Verde from last year’s Dubbel Dark tee, and you’d be correct. The simple shape and great fit of that little top had me reaching for it again and again, but as the days got cold, I wanted a cozy version with sleeves.
The beauty of Vinho Verde is the simple silhouette, paired with a bold hem. I loved the fit of the abbreviated saddle on Dubbel Dark, but lengthened it a little here for added structure, and paired it with some sleeve-specific shaping. Soft yarn and a short turtleneck added exactly what I need for cool weather wear.
Of course, it’s easy to modify the silhouette shown in a number of ways, so your Vinho Verde works best for you and your wardrobe.
I’ve included four different neckline options as well as notes on making sure your saddle shoulders fit you as they should. You can easily work the lower body to any length you like, and if those wide sleeves are not for you, I’ve noted how to skip the extra ease for a classic, more fitted shape. Notes on all of this are in the PDF.
Lace instructions are both charted and written out.
Vinho Verde is knit in the round, from the top down. Shaping begins with saddle shoulders, using short rows to lower the front neckline. Sleeves are increased at shoulder before yoke begins. Raglan yoke shaping is then continued along seams to underarm.
Once yoke is complete, sleeves are put on hold and body is knit downwards to end. When body is complete, sleeves are picked back up and knit in the round to end.
Sizing
38(41.5,45.5,48,51.5)(55.5,59.5,64)”
96.5(105.5,115.5,122,130.75)(141,151.25,162.5)cm
Sizes are based on circumference around bust in final, blocked fabric. I suggest choosing the size option with 3-5”/7.5-12.75cm of positive ease, based on your actual bust.
Yardage by Size/Yarn
850(950,1050,1200,1250)(1350,1450,1500)yds
775,870,1005,1100,1145)(1235,1325,1370)m
A heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn works best for this pattern. I suggest a soft wool or a wool blend to provide stability along the seamless yoke. I like a Cormo, Targhee, Rambouillet or other lofty fiber for this, or a wool blend (up to 35% of a softer fiber with wool) would add just a bit of drape, while also preventing growth over time.

The Mountain Mohair I used is limited in quantity for a few months, but Kate from GMS was happy with her test in Weekend Wool. Images of her sample are included to show Weekend Wool as an option. Note though, that her test knit has a few modifications from the pattern as written, including more fitted sleeves, lace cuffs, extended shoulder saddles, and a longer body.
