OVERVIEW
Waffle stitch is a fun and engaging, yet easy to memories pattern of 3 stitches and 4 rows, including knits and purls. This waffle cardigan/jacket is sure to fly off the needles, so there’s no fear of being stuck on “sleeve island” with this pattern. You will find it difficult to put down, as you keep saying to yourself “just one more waffle pattern repeat”. The cardigan/jacket depending on your yarn choice is knitted in a top-down raglan construction with sleeve decreases, and a double knitted button band.

YARN
Yarn used: DROPS air color 02 wheat

Drops Air is a blown yarn, meaning that instead of being traditionally spun, it is made with a fine
polyamide mesh tube into which alpaca and wool fibers are blown with air. This process traps the
fibers inside the tube, creating a fluffy, voluminous strand that looks chunky but remains
surprisingly lightweight. The resulting yarn produces fabric that is warm and airy due to the
insulating air pockets, very soft and low in density, though not as strong as tightly spun yarns and
more prone to pilling.

  • Cardigan: You can substitute with any other worsted or aran weight blown yarn that gives a light yet voluminous texture. Good options include Sandnes Garn KOS, Lana Grossa Alpaca Air, or similar soft, airy blends. These will maintain the cozy feel and light drape.

  • Jacket (instead of a cardigan): If you want to create a sturdier, more wind-resistant fabric suitable for outerwear, switch to a worsted-weight yarn held together with a strand of mohair. Keep the same needle size as in the original pattern. This slight increase in yarn density will produce a tighter, more compact fabric. The added mohair strand enhances warmth, structure, and wind protection while preserving a soft surface texture and halo.

Yarn examples:

  • Sandnes Garn Double Sunday held together with Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair.
  • Filcolana Peruvian Highland Wool held together with Filcolana Tilia.
  • Drops Nepal held together with Drops Kid-Silk.

MATERIALS
Size 4.0 mm knitting circular needles.
Size 5.0 mm knitting circular needles.
The magic loop method is used, this makes the length of the knitting needles less important. I
recommend 40 cm for collar, begining of colorwork, and sleeves. And 60-80 cm for body.

GAUGE
17 sts x 22 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm of waffle stitch pattern (after blocking).
