Presenting the first in a series of free basic patterns….Watch the Birdie! Adorable bluebird buttons bring the fun factor to this simple striped cardigan.

Check out my other patterns for babies, kids and miniskeins.

Relax and enjoy knitting this basic unisex cardigan, sized from newborn right up to 4 years. A fabulous blank canvas for you to explore stripes, colour blocks, pops of neon, fun buttons, embroidery…whatever takes your fancy.

Knit in fingering/4ply yarn, this is an excellent stashbuster. Take a look at all your leftovers and combine them to make something truly useful. I used six colours for my sample…could this also be the perfect knit for a miniskein set??

Yarn
This is a free pattern, originally designed to use a yarn kit that came free with a magazine. In order to minimise production time and costs, I have not included yarn quantities. As a guide, expect to use 220 (280, 340, 400, 475 // 550, 600, 700) m total.

Construction
The cardigan is worked in pieces from the hem up to the underarms. Fronts, Back and Sleeves are then joined and knitting continues as a single piece for the yoke, with raglan decreases ending at the neckband. Sts are picked up along fronts to work button bands. Pockets are worked separately and sewn onto fronts.
