Wax & Wane
Knit in the round from the top down, Wax & Wane features a Bauhaus-inspired half moon motif. This pattern incorporates underarm shaping to give the traditional round yoke construction an improved fit.
The pattern includes:
- A schematic
- Tutorial links to techniques required
- Fit Points and a Bust Adjustment document to help you customize the fit of the sweater.
Is this a good project for me?
This pattern requires two-colour stranded knitting, increasing/decreasing in a colourwork chart, and short rows. My testers reported that the trickiest bit was the shaping within the chart, and may feel advanced to those who haven’t tried colourwork before. Confident colourwork knitters will find the shaping very manageable, and it’s a satisfying next step if you’ve already got stranded knitting under your belt.
Sizes
(1, 2, 3) (4, 5, 6) (7, 8, 9)
These sizes are intended to fit actual body measurements of:
Upper chest circumference (measured around armpit level): (77.5, 85.5, 93.5) (102, 110, 118.5) (126.5, 134.5, 140) cm/(30.5, 33.75, 36.75) (40.25, 43.25, 46.75) (49.75, 53, 55) in
Full chest circumference: (71-76, 81-86, 91.5-96.5) (101.5-106.5, 111.5-117, 122-127) (132-137, 142-147, 152-158) cm/(28-30, 32-34, 36-38) (40-42, 44-46, 48-50) (52-54, 56-58, 60-62) in
The sweater has a finished full chest circumference of (81, 88, 99) (109.5, 120, 130.5) (141, 148, 162.5) cm/(32.5, 35.25, 39.5) (43.75, 48, 52.25) (56.5, 59.25, 65) in.
Choose a size based on your high bust circumference with consideration for full bust circumference. This pattern was designed to have 2.5-10 cm/1-4 in positive ease in the full bust, but can handle up to 2.5 cm/1 in negative ease. Sample shown is size 3 worn with 9 cm/3.5 in positive ease on a 90 cm/35.5 in full bust.
Gauge
Half Moon Chart in the round: 17 sts and 21 rnds = 10 cm/4 in using gauge-size needle.
Corrugated Rib: 20 sts and 30 rnds = 10 cm/4 in using below-gauge-size needle
Yarn
PatricKnits DK Canada, (113 g/248 m, 100% Canadian wool (Dorset-Suffolk-Cheviot)) in Hummus (MC, off-white), Caramel (CC1, orange), and Slate Blue (CC2, blue); (2, 2, 2) (3, 3, 3) (3, 4, 4) skeins MC, (1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2) (2, 2, 3) skeins CC1, and (1, 1, 2) (2, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2) skeins CC2. This yarn is a rustic, non-superwash, woolen-spun, 2-ply wool with 9wpi and a suggested gauge of 18-20 sts; though it’s listed as a DK, it behaves more like a worsted or Aran weight yarn.
MC: (375, 403, 470) (529, 582, 649) (711, 769, 850) m/(409, 440, 513) (578, 636, 709) (776, 840, 929) yd
CC1: (240, 258, 301) (339, 373, 415) (455, 492, 544) m/(262, 282, 329) (370, 407, 454) (497, 538, 595) yd
CC2: (207, 222, 259) (292, 321, 358) (392, 424, 469) m/(226, 243, 283) (319, 351, 391) (428, 463, 512) yd
Needles and Notions
Below-gauge-size needle should be two sizes smaller than your gauge-size needle.
For reference, gauge was achieved with a 4 mm/US 6 needle. Below-gauge size needle used was 3.5 mm/US 4.
80-100 cm/32-40 in gauge-size circular needles
Below-gauge size needles for working cuffs, button band, and hem
Scrap yarn or stitch holders
9 stitch markers, including one unique BOR marker
Skills Required
Knit, purl, picking up stitches, reading charts, Long-Tail Cast-On, two-colour stranded knitting, increasing and decreasing in a colourwork chart; tutorial links included for Colour Dominance, Corrugated Rib, I-Cord Bind-Off, and Right Lifted Increase.
Construction Plan
Wax & Wane is knit from the top down. After casting on and joining in the round, short rows are worked to raise the back neck before beginning the colourwork yoke. The yoke is knit to a given length before marking body and sleeve stitches and working underarm shaping. After dividing for body and sleeves, the body is knit to length and finished with a two-colour corrugated rib hem. Sleeve stitches are picked back up and the sleeves are decreased slowly until the cuff. Finally, neckline stitches are picked back up to work corrugated ribbing to finish the neck.
