“Wee Hoose” Ulster-Scots dialect for: small house

“Wee Hoose” Christmas Stocking is designed using Folklore Yarns “Traditions” a Donegal Tweed Yarn. I am from N. Ireland and my husband is Scottish. There are a lot of words held in common in the Ulster-Scots dialect, not least the term “wee”, which we tend to use in almost every sentence! Christmas is a special time in our Hoose, we have traditions that make it special, including the hanging of the Christmas Stockings. The “Wee Hoose” Christmas Stocking and the “Folklore” Christmas Stocking from 2020, are definitely handknits that can become precious family heirlooms handed down through the generations. I hope you enjoy knitting the pattern as much as I have enjoyed working with this yarn and designing it.
——
The “Wee Hoose” Stocking is knit using the traditional stranded colourwork method. The pattern has written instructions, but uses charts for the colourwork. It is knit using a short circular but can be adapted to the magic loop method or double pointed needles.

The stocking is knit from the top down, with instructions for a Wrap and Turn short row heel, however this can be changed to your own choice of short row or FLK heel. The toe is a rounded toe, but this can be changed to your own choice.

Needles:
5 mm (US 8) circular needles/dpns for colourwork
4 mm (US 6) circular needles/dpns for toe and heel
If using a short circular you will need either a longer cable for magic loop or dpns when the circumference gets too small nearing the end of the toe.

Yarn:
Aran weight yarn - 100g of two contrasting colours
Yarn used: Folklore Yarns Traditions - Donegal Yarns Aran Tweed Colours Raphoe & Ecru
Available from https://folkloreyarns.com/collections/traditions-a-donega

Gauge: 20 sts x 21 rows per 4 inches using 5 mm (US 8) needle in colourwork. Although gauge is not essential it will impact the amount of yarn required.

Notions: two different stitch markers to denote beginning and middle of round, tapestry needle.
