Inspired by “Whitby Pattern IV” from Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys and Arans by Gladys Thompson. The traditional Betty Martin stitch pattern becomes a stretchy fabric that, when worked on small needles, is perfect for socks.

The left and right socks are mirror images of each other, with a cable that runs down the outside of each leg all the way to the toe.

Sizing and Yarn requirements:

Sizes: S/M (M/L) to fit foot circumference up to 21.5 (25.5) cm/81⁄2 (10).

Size S/M is recommended for foot circumferences 16.5-20.5cm/61⁄2-8” or children’s shoe sizes UK 1-5/US 2-6/EU 33-38, and women’s shoe sizes up to UK 6/US 8/ EU 39.

We used one 100g skein of baa ram ewe Dovestone dk to make the S/M pair (shown in Goathland) to fit UK size 5 with only a small amount of yarn left over.

Size M/L is recommended for foot circumferences 19-24cm/71⁄2-91⁄2” or women’s shoe sizes from UK 7/US 9/ EU 40 and all men’s sizes.

We needed two 100g skeins to make the M/L pair shown in Endeavour to fit UK size 9 and used approximately 10g of the second skein.

Needles

3mm/US 2.5 dpns or your preferred needles for knitting small circumferences in the round. You will also need stitch markers and a cable needle.
