Whitefish Headband
Inspired by the whitefish caught off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the fish scale-type pattern and tricky, seamless design of this headband make it the perfect extra bit of warmth when you’re out in the boat hoping to reel in your first catch on a cool morning. The pattern is known to stretch a little, so knitting it a bit on the tight side is preferred.
Skill level: Advanced beginner.
Size: Adjust pattern to fit.
Yarn: Worsted or Aran weight of any type. My first time I used a skein of handspun, 100% New Zealand wool; the second time I used StahlSche Wolle Hochland Soft Tweed (67% virgin wool, 19% acrylic, 9% alpaca, 3% viscose, 2% cotton), color 1123, 50g/95m.
Needles: US size 6, or size to obtain gauge. I like to use double points so I can keep everything on needles and not use stitch holders, but you can use regular needles, just know that you’ll need a stitch holder.
Notions: Stitch holder, tapestry needle, app. 30 inches of scrap yarn.
Gauge: 19 sts = 4 inches, app. 8 rows = 1 inch in fish-scale pattern.
