Inspired by a surprise & rare find of a wild orchid in a wood near my home, this sideways knitted shawl or shawlette is a versatile knit in two different depths and two versions (elongated crescent / triangle or asymmetrical). The garter body has an i-cord top edge which is worked at the same time as the rest of the shawl and a deep lace border of a flower panel and then fagoting which forms a zigzag lower edge.

For the crescent / triangular versions, half the yarn is used before starting the decrease section and the asymmetrical one can be worked to use all the yarn, making it adaptable to different yardages.

Although examples are in 3ply to fingering, it could also be made in a thicker yarn for a cosy winter wrap.

SIZES (variable according to yarn & number of repeats) e.g.:
Shallow crescent: 18 (20)rpts in fingering approx. 48.5” / 123 cm x 14”/ 35.5 cm (53’’ /135 cm x 14’’ / 35.5 cm).
Deeper triangular: 24 rpts in 3ply approx. 60’’ / 152 cm x 26’’ / 66 cm.
26 rpts in fingering approx. 70” / 178 cm x 26” / 66 cm.
Shallow asymmetrical: 26 rpts in fingering approx. 70’’ / 178 cm x 22’’ / 56 cm
Deeper asymmetrical: 19 rpts in fingering approx. 51’’ / 130 cm x 45’’ / 114 cm

GAUGE: 4” / 10 cm over garter stitch before blocking

3ply on 3.75 mm needles: 17 sts / 33 rows
