Windborne Beanie
About:
The Windborne Beanie is a DK weight / 8ply beanie that is worked in the round and features a textured twisted stitch of a traveling 1:1 cable pattern. The design creates a richly knitted fabric with great stitch definition. The pattern includes instructions for a cosy doubled over, folded brim, with the option to work a single brim. It is written to be worked in multiple sizes from infant through to large adult, making it a practical knit for gifting, family sets, or everyday wear.
The design is inspired by my ancestry and the cultural heritage of the Celtic people who settled in Aotearoa - New Zealand. Many settlers travelled by ship, carried across the ocean by wind and weather, bringing their stories, skills, and traditions with them. This beanie reflects that sense of movement and belonging — the idea of being carried by the wind, and of honouring where my ancestors come from, while creating something made to be worn today.
Recommended yarn: DK / 8ply
Sample is knitted with Mrs Peacock Yarns, Polwarth, DK.
Gauge: 22 sts and 30 rounds = 10 cm / 4 in. Worked in pattern, in the round, after blocking.
A Note on choosing yarn:
I recommend choosing yarns which have good stitch definition, and less variegation of colour. For example, a single colour tone, or a good quality, single colour hand dyed yarn. This way your pattern will stand out, and you will see the pattern design clearly. I recommend swatching your yarn with the pattern to see if the cables stand out.
Recommended needles: (adjust needles to meet gauge)
3.5mm / US4 for ribbing and 4mm / US6 circular needles, DPNs, or preferred method for working small circumferences in the round.
