The music of the Korean “KPop” group BTS just makes me smile. BTS is on a break just now and one of the members has put out a solo single called “Winter Bear”. In the video, he wears a great, simple beret with a great shape. And I love the name “Winter Bear” so…

This beret recreates the shape but not the actual knit. A simple rolled edge and a Vikkel Braid, followed by eyelet increases then stockinette up to the tip. Simple, with a little fairy pull at the top to make it special. It knits up in about 2 hours so it makes for great gifting.

Knit in Tahki Arlington, it’s a bulky yarn that’s soft and knits up quickly but doesn’t present as “bulky”. I love this yarn! There are two versions of this beret, a trimmer, smaller diameter beret (maroon hat) and slightly larger beret, a little slouchier, less crisp lines (Blue hat.)

My daughter and I are traveling to Korea soon to meet her birth family. This beret will be a gift for her sister. She is responsible for knitting a hat for her brother…

Four sizes: Infant (Child, Adult, Large Adult)
Adult (maroon and blue) shown in photo.

Note: Instructions below in blue allow the knitter to create a wider beret.
Work rounds in blue ONLY if this is desired.
This will also add about 3/4 in / 2 cm of height to the hat
The result will be a bit roomier and slouchier.

Gauge: 12 sts by 18 rows = 4 in / 10 cm, blocked
Finished Height: ( 6.5, 7.5, 8, 8.5 ) in / ( 16.5, 19, 20, 21.5 ) cm
(add 3/4 inn / 2 cm for wider diameter beret)
Circumference: (15, 17, 19, 21) in / ( 38, 43, 48, 54 ) cm at braid, slightly stretched.
