I was inspired by Latvian mittens with their sun symbols which have the meaning of change and renewal/hope. I find this is particularly suited to this time of the year and the holiday season. As they are not only worn at Christmas or Yuletide I chose the name Wintertide where “tide” merely means “a time of year”. There is a somewhat similar crochet mitten pattern called Wintertide which is cool, here is my version which is knitted.

This is a standard mitten shape, knitted in the round with peasant thumb. The thumb is knitted after the main part of the mitten has been done.

The construction is the traditional one which means you vary gauge by changing needle size in order to achieve different sizes. I have supplied a table of sizes and gauges so that you know which gauge to aim for.

These mittens were designed to go with my “Winter is Here” sock pattern.
Size: Shown in size women’s M with a finished circumference of 21 cm. The mittens are sized with 5-10% positive ease.

Gauge:
Shown in gauge: 36 stitches and 40 rounds to 10 cm / 4 inches. You will choose your own gauge.

The pattern has been checked for errors and test knitted.
