I love designs that never go out of style, especially those where if something seems dated, all you have to do is tweak a detail or two, or even just change colors or yarns, to get an updated sweater. You can’t go wrong with a deep V-neck, set-in sleeves, and cable details.
I also have fun playing with variations on construction where even a knitter with a less-than-expert-level skill set can feel like a pro when making one of my designs. In this pullover, I’ve combined some straightforward in-the-round construction with an applied cable band along the neckline, as well as a cabled band on each sleeve that serves as the starting point for the sleeve.
The body is worked in the round from the bottom up until you get to the bottom of the V-neck. Once you reach the armholes, the front and back are divided to work each to the shoulders, which are shaped using German short-rows. Join the shoulders using Three-Needle Bind-Off.
The sleeves begin by working the cabled band from end to end, then grafting the ends together to form a loop. The cuff stitches are picked up along one side of the loop and worked down. The sleeve stitches are picked up along the remaining edge of the loop and worked in the round to the beginning of the sleeve cap.
The cabled neckband is worked as an applied edging, using short-rows to shape it around the back neck.
