Structure. The main structural elements of this modular shawl (ying-yang motifs) joined into stripes with Kitchener stitch row (very short). The stripes are later joined together with very long stacked decrease worked on picked-up stitches.

Materials:

  • fingering-weight yarn: 100g/400m of each yellow and blue-green for the spirals (I used Jill Draper Makes Stuff sock yarn, Caterpillar clr) for the prototype., and 100g/400m for the top and border of the shawl (I used solid yellow yarn very similar to the variegated used for spirals).
  • 3.5mm needles: shorter for the motifs and long for joining them together.
  • tapestry needle
  • locking markers or safety pins. You’ll need a lot of those!

Size: the size depends on the number of rows of spirals; you can make it any size. The prototype on the photo has 5 rows, from 1 to 5 motifs wide, and measures 180cm wide X 90cm tall. Each motif takes about 6.5 g /25m of yarn of each color and measures approx. 22cm in diameter.
Gauge: approximately 22 sts x28 rows = 10cm.
