How to crochet the Zoey Beanie, a cozy beanie pattern worked in the Suzette Stitch, which is a combination of simple single and double crochet stitches. Available in 7 sizes.

Video tutorial included for the Adult Small size.

Note: This pattern was previously named the Suzette Beanie and part of the Suzette series. I’ve decided to rename it in my October 2025 update to the Zoey Beanie, and will be renaming the following matching patterns over time - will be sure to update this listing as it’s done as well.

Matching Suzette Stitch Crochet Patterns:

Materials:

  • 37 (49, 62, 82, 110, 140, 171) Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn - I used WeCrochet Swish in Dove Heather
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook (for crown)
  • I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook (for body)
  • Soft Tape Measure (Gauge is Essential)
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:
If you’ll be creating and donating your beanie for cancer patients, I’ve learned from my friend Krissy’s Over the Mountain Crochet that the best yarn for a sensitive head is going to be a bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo (which are also perfect for warmer weather beanies). Some can tolerate 100% acrylic or wool, but not all can. With this said, I recommend looking up the requirements from the organization. Some say not to use wool yarn, not to use Red Heart Super Saver, request the hat/s to be washed prior to donating, etc. Each has it’s own guidelines so you’ll want to check with the organization first.

As a cold weather beanie, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always a 100% superwash merino wool, like WeCrochet Swish Yarn, or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage. All of these that I’ve mentioned hold up well to wear and tear and machine washing and drying. Acrylic yarns do okay in cool weather as long as it’s not that windy, otherwise, the wind goes right through them.

Time Spent:
I was able to work up the teen/adult small size in just under 1 and a half hours.

Gauge (Essential):
With H8/5mm, In the round starting with 10 DC, after Round 3 = 3”

Measured in Pattern at crown diameter checkpoint.

Abbreviations (US Terms):
