Zoey Scarf
A free version is also available.
How to crochet a cute and cozy scarf worked in the Suzette Stitch, which is a combination of simple single and double crochet stitches that you work into the same stitch, then you skip a stitch. It produces small shells that look like they’re slanted over and when you turn at the end of the round and work back, it also puffs those clusters slightly.

Yarn Talk:
I have made 3 versions of this scarf. The first version was a blue and gray striped scarf back in 2015 using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Turquoise and Graphite. My next sample was a solid colored scarf made in 2020 using Red Heart Super Saver in the Aran Fleck colorway. In 2026, I’ve completely overhauled the pattern making another solid colored scarf using Queensland Falkland in the Pearl colorway.
You can use any worsted weight yarn from your stash - pick your favorite! If the finished size is essential to you, check your gauge, but if not, just start crocheting - you can even go up to a #5 chunky weight yarn for an oversized, cozy scarf.
Keep in mind when you’ll use your scarf and the level of warmth you would like it to have. As a cozy scarf for cold weather, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always wool. You can go with a superwash option so you don’t have to worry about it felting from friction and/or washing, or a non-superwash option, like the Falkland I used (which is actually machine washable without the worry of felting, but not dryable). I also really like using a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease. All of these that I’ve mentioned hold up well to wear and tear and machine washing. Acrylic yarns do okay in cool weather as long as it’s not that windy, otherwise, the wind goes right through them. The nice thing about this scarf is that the stitches are tighter and more solid so it does do better with the wind. If you prefer a cotton yarn, use a cotton blend for added durability, like Lion Brand Made with Love.
Grams/Yardage by Size:
- Toddler: 140 Yards (64 Grams)
- Child: 288 Yards (132 Grams)
- Adult Small: 417 Yards (191 Grams)
- Adult Large: 567 Yards (260 Grams)
Tools & Notions:
When I made the original scarf, I did use a I9/5.5mm crochet hook for my scarf, it was my go-to hook for worsted weight projects at the time. I’ve since gone down to an H8/5mm crochet as my go-to and the other two scarves were made with this size. With gauge not being essential for a scarf, if you don’t mind that your scarf might come out a little larger, you can absolutely go up to the I9/5.5mm crochet hook if you’re more comfortable with that, or even a J10/6mm. Note, the yardage requirements do vary when switching hook sizes.
Tape measure in case gauge is essential to you, or you want to measure as you go.
Time Spent:
The adult small took me just under 4 hours.
