Notes

March 31, 2022:
I started the 2nd pair today. LTCO 44 sts on US #6. Garter section on US #4. Body in US #6.

I used these methods:

Seamless Join in the Round by Assia Brill.

To prevent the jog in the garter section, do this: On every knit round, slip the 1st st and move the BOR stitch marker after the slipped st.

Modified SSK - same as a usual SSK except that you slip the 2nd st p-wise.

M1L = If the loop is such that the working yarn is in the back, it is a left leaning increase. For right handed folks, pick up the yarn clockwise on your thumb.

M1R = If the loop is such that the working yarn is in the front, it is a right leaning increase. fRont and Right both have an R! For right handed folks, pick up yarn anti-clockwise on your thumb.

Here is a blog with pictures and easy definition of backward loop (same as e-loop) left leaning and right leaning increases.

Added a thumb gusset. I was largely influenced by the instruction by GraceIvy on Kathryn Ivy’s blog here. I wanted the side miter lines to flow seamlessly. So I placed the thumb after the miter on the palm side.

Using 4 dpns - palm sts on dpns 1 and 2; hand sts on dpns 3 and 4.

Knit 17 rows in the mitered pattern after the garter border.

Right mitten - thumb gusset increases worked on 1st dpn after the 1st 3 sts. Starting with a plain knit row for the gusset increases.

Round 1: k3, M1L, k to end (12 sts on dpn 1)
Round 2: work miter pattern and knit the M1 from Row 1.
Round 3: k3, M1L, k1, M1L, k to end (14 sts on dpn 1)
Round 4: work miter pattern and knit the M1s from the previous row.
Round 5: k3, M1L, k3, M1L, k to end (16 sts on dpn 1).
Round 6: work miter pattern and knit the M1s from the previous row.
Continue until 15 sts are increased (26 sts on dpn 1).

Left mitten - thumb gusset increases worked on 2nd dpn when 3 sts remain on the needle.

Round 1: k until 3 sts remain on dpn 2, M1R, k to end (12 sts on dpn 2)
Round 2: work miter pattern and knit the M1 from Row 1.
Round 3: k until 4 sts remain on dpn 2, M1R, k1, M1R, k to end (14 sts on dpn 2).
Round 4: work miter pattern and knit the M1s from the previous row.
Round 5: k until 4 sts remain on dpn 2, M1R, k1, M1R, k to end (16 sts on dpn 2).
Round 6: work miter pattern and knit the M1s from the previous row.
Continue until 15 sts are increased (26 sts on dpn 2).

Picked up extra sts when working the thumb. Decreased 3 to 1 on the next row. Knit thumb for 16 rows. k2tog on the last 2 rows. Thread through rem 4 sts and pull to close as in a hat.

Knit 17 cuff rows.
Knit 17 rows after the thumb and before the top decreases.
Decreased every alternate row until 16 sts remained. Then did decreases on every row until 8 sts remained. Pulled yarn through sts to close.

March 24, 2022:
Starting the first pair. 1st pair.
LTCO 48 sts with US 6 needles.
Garter section on US #4.
Rest of the mittens on US #6.

After the garter border I knit a row while making a k2tog on sts (1, 2), (13, 14), (25, 26), and (37, 38). I now have 44 sts.

Knit 21 cuff rows. Started thumb gusset on a plain row. Knit 16 rows after the thumb and before the top decreases. Decreased every alternate row until 16 sts remained. Then did decreases on every row until 8 sts remained. Pulled yarn through sts to close.

Knit 16 rows on the thumb before decreases.

Comments: Noro is a beautiful yarn with a personality which does not lend well to tight knitting. So regular M1L and M1R (instead of backward loop cast on) would be better. With 15 sts on the thumb and picking up a few at the base made the thumb too big at the base. Next time increase thumb sts by 13 and pick up 3 sts at the base. Overall, a fun pattern.
