Notes

October 24, 2020: My hat needs to fit a 22” head.

I am using a Cascade sockyarn and a laceweight Mohair, held together. I have made the Oslo Hat in the past using the same combination of yarns. For that hat I cast on 112 sts and knit on US #3 needles. It was snug on my daughter’s 21” head..

My gauge (holding cascade heritage and mohair together) on US #4 needles: 25 stitches and 34 rows makes 4”. I need this hat to fit a 22” head. So I am casting on 112 sts and will knit the hat on US #4 needles.

--Long tail cast on 112 sts with US #6 needles, holding Cascade heritage and Luna mohair together.
--Left a very long tail which can be used to sew up the brim fold later.
--Switched to US #4 and joined in the round.
--I marked the first stitch of the long tail cast on edge with a locking stitch marker. This will be the first stitch to sew when folding the brim.
--Knit in stockinette stitch until the hat measured 20cm from the cast on edge.
--Pass dental floss through the live sts to mark the 20cm line.
--Knit for 2cm more.
--On the next row I reduced 4 sts bringing down the stitch count to 108.
--Turn work. I used the German short row technique as in this video.
--Continue in stockinette stitch on the wrong side for another 17cm.
--On the last row I reduced the stitch count by 4 sts bringing down the total to 104 sts.
--Place markers after every 26 sts.

Transfer to US #4 circulars. I began the decreases with a k1, k2tog at the BOR rather than at the EOR. I also worked the modified SSK as follows:
slip 1 st k-wise, slip the next stitch p-wise, transfer both sts back to the LHN and knit the two sts tog tbl.

The Mohair Oslo hat pattern has a k1 between the k2tog and ssk in the decrease section. The original Oslo hat pattern does not.

Alternate decreases 8 times until 40 sts remain.
Decrease every row until 16 sts remain.
Work a row of K2tog until 8 sts remain.
Close the hat and weave in ends.

Used this Video to fold brim just below the stitches I marked with the dental floss.

It was impossible to see what I was doing because of the black yarn. So I ran another length of dental floss through the purl sts that I had to fold the brim onto. It worked well.

Measurements after blocking:
Width: 18” circumference (outside measurement)
Length with cuff folded: 9.5” tall

The cuff is folded 3 times and is quite thick. The width measurements are on the outside of the hat. The width of the part that actually sits on the head is at least about 1/2 an inch smaller.

Observations:
That hat is beautiful. The mohair has very subtle gold (metallic) flecks. I was not able to capture that on the photograph too well. And, it fits amazingly well too!
