One of Heidi’s best designs yet! I’m thrilled with how this turned out! I only made a couple of very minor adjustments:

1) I used safety eyes, which made it very difficult to try and “sculpt” the eye sockets like Heidi describes. Instead, I elected to give Drucilla eyelids, which I think adds the needed character to her face. The eyelids are made as follows: Ch 10, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in each of the next 5 ch, hdc in the next ch, sc in the last ch. Finish off, leaving enough of a tail to sew on. I make mine “curl” upwards on the ends to give her a little more feminine look.

2) As usual, I used 3 dc in the motif corners instead of (dc, ch 1, dc). You can see my project Happy Hippo for Gage for more details on how to do this.

3) For the back scales, I used jayg and I modified the final round of the motifs to make the triangle bottoms a bit more flat, which made them easier to sew on:

Sl st over to the 1st “corner”, sc in the 1st corner, ch 2 (begin jayg if relevant), 2 dc in the same corner; proceed as normal across 2 sides of the triangle; (2 dc, ch 3, sc) in the last “corner”; sl st across and join to the beginning sl st. Leave a reasonably long strand of yarn for later sewing (any leftover strands can be easily tucked up inside of the closest scale to finish off).

4) The wings were a little “floppier” than I wanted, so I tacked them in place to achieve the desired effect. I also, used sc instead of whip-stitching them together.
