Ispired by Lutz&Patmos lovely cardigan, knitting technology by EZ Surprise jacket.
I personalized this so much I’m not even sure I have a right to call it ASJ ;)
Main mods I made: mittered corners on the back and couple of short rows on each side for a better fit. Mitre plus short rows at the back (just as in front) gives some shape. Something like a corset. the one true lady would wear :)) i never succeeded to get that on a 2D pic though :( I also added huge double collar for a shick look :) and made wide 3/4 sleeves.
Yarn: 3 yarns put together (1 handspun wool + 1 just regular wool :) + 1 tweed)
Knitted in one-piece from beginning to end. Or maybe 2 more if picking up stitches counts as a separate piece. :)
OK, my gauge was 4’’/10 cm = 9.5 st and 16 rows (meaning 8 ribs) over garter st using US10/6 mm needle. Check the attached Pic 1 for a CO scheme.
When casting on it is difficult to forecast how the garment will turn out and I wanted it more fitted than the original ASJ. Up until the last minute, I was still a bit worried of whether the jacket would fit - it looked too small so I riped it out, second attempt made it too large… The way you see it now turned out after my 5th!!! attempt. 5th I tell you! :)
I used a provisional CO only for the back seam part (meaning CO on a waste yarn) as I intended to pick up those stitches for another half of jacket initially - did not wanted to sew it up. And the regular CO for the rest. Started from center of the back, knitted to sleeve edge. Mitered corners completed the sides. I knitted the lower part of the double collar while knitting the body.
Double BO on the side seam and finished the sleeve.
Then picked up stiches on the back to have the other side of a jacket knitted same way. By the way, if you chose to pick up stitches rather than sewing halves up, watch out to follow the garter pattern right. You may need to purl one row (I mean the back seam part) before you actually CO for the second half. This is for making garter ribs look right. Sounds complicated, but becomes clear when you get there :)
After body part’s done I picked up stiches on the back for a upper part of double garter-stich collar. I used Kitchener stitch to weave the top of the collar and since it was the only seam I call this jacket “knitted in one piece” :)
