Notes

The “sweater of mistakes” since the numbers were all slightly off and I had to rework more of it than any previous sweater, but it came out great in the end. Perfect for fall weather, and I’m wearing it all the time.

Size 6 body, 7-8 upper arm

2026-03-01

Swatch with 4.0mm needle was 21sts / 3.5” (aka 24 in 4”)
Gauge is 21sts / 4”,
but mine can probably be stretched?

Bust measurement 46”, design for 6-12” ease (so 52-58”)

Size 6:
designed: 54.5”
with my gauge, likely to be 44.5” (negative ease)
( 54.5” x 21sts/4” = 268 sts * 3.5”/21sts = 44.5, though pattern has 296 sts there = 49” which is better )

size 7:
designed: 57.5”
with my gauge, likely to be 50”
( 57.5” x 21sts/4” = 301 sts * 3.5”/21sts = 50”, though pattern has 312 sts there = 52” )

2026-03-31

Cast on size 7, to compensate for the small gauge.

Added 4 sts to the arm areas, and moved the raglan lines towards the body by 1 sts. Will cast on 2 extra underarm sts to compensate.

About to split for sleeves, blocked with minimal to no stretching to see how it’s going.

Measured 2 spots
22 sts in 4” (almost gauge)
23.5 sts in 4 (between gauge and swatch)
24 sts in 4” (same as swatch)

Seems like I’m between the gauge and swatch numbers, but more towards swatch, so I’ll keep going.

Probably don’t need further modifications to arm size

2026-05-03

Knit most of body, blocked to be longer than wide, and sampled gauge - 24/25.5/25.5 sts in 4”.

Fits well, length is good, so can switch to ribbing

IIRC used 3.75mm needle?

Sleeve changes:

Instead of knit one round then decrease round, did decreases across the gap between picked up and held stitches (sts 11 and 12 from BOR) to close that gap a little, then skipped decrease round. Didn’t include this in the math below.

Want to blend from size 9 to size 7 sleeve.
After 6 decreases (48 rows), switch from decreases every 8 rows to every 6, 17 times (gain 4 decrease rows)

2026-05-21

Changed mind, skipped last 2 decrease rows (total 15) so it’s size 8.

  • 6 decreases at 8 rows
  • 9 decreases at 6 rows
  • then 26 more rows before cuff (including a row with 1 decrease to match the target for size 8)

IIRC used 3.75mm needle, but maybe was 3.5mm??

2026-06-06

Second sleeve circumference is about an inch larger by the cuff, inexplicably. Maybe I’ll re knit the cuff in 3.5mm? Used 3.75mm because that’s what I thought the first one was, but maybe not

Going to do this modification https://www.ravelry.com/projects/yarnandvegetables/ilha for the neck
3.75mm needles - knit 8 rows
3.5mm needles - knit 4 rows
3.25mm needles - knit 2 rows
YO bind off

I finished it a couple days ago, with 3 asterisks

  • left sleeve was noticeably larger than the right sleeve (despite having the same number of stitches), and I didn’t like it, so was going to reknit the cuff and part of the sleeve with smaller needles or higher tension
  • length was too cropped, going to add 2”
  • neck is still too wide and boat-necked, not sure what to do

Fortunately, I blocked it before I started taking it apart. The body and sleeves both grew about 2 inches! So now the body is the right length (yay) and the sleeves are too long (boo) but I was going to take one apart anyway, so it’s not that much extra work (yay)

Still not sure what to do with the neck, which is even wider now.

2026-08-18

Added a crochet chain to the original cast on at the neck which did a great job of keeping it from stretching out too much.

Also took out the neck ribbing because it was now too big and redid it with 14 rows on 3.25mm needles.

Body didn’t stay long and I’ve decided I don’t like cropped length, so still going to add 2”

2026-08-28

Forgot to go down a needle size or two for the bottom ribbing but I’m not knitting that again.

2026-09-18

Redid left sleeve from about the elbow down (where the decreases changed cadence). As I feared, my ‘knit it but a bit tighter’ meant the left sleeve is now smaller than the right sleeve. Close enough, I’m not doing that again.

Blocked, and much happier with the sweater overall! Glad it turned out after the series of mistakes, mis-sizes and frustrations that the last half ended up being.
