Notes

February 9, 2025

First square is 10x10, as is the second.
With decrease side facing, I cast-on 10, knit back to first square, picked up 10, and knit all 20. Thereafter, the decreases are in the same side as on the first square.

Third square is 20x20.

1330 hrs.
Until now, I didn’t know what size needle I was using. Measured: US 10 (6mm).
Until now, I was using whatever crochet hook was handy for casting on - mostly 5mm. From now on, I’ll be using a 6mm hook.

1500 hrs.
Fourth square is 30x30.

February 11, 2025

Along one 50 stitch side, squares 5 through 11 are 10x10.

Website I am using to determine next size square: https://www.calculateme.com/math/factor-calculator/50

February 11, 2025

1625 hrs.
Tenth square is 20x20, as is eleventh.

March 3, 2025

Twelfth square (and the rest along that 70-stitch side) is 14x14.

March 4, 2025

End of square, when only four stitches remain:
Slip first stitch purlwise, knit second stitch, slip first stitch over second, remove stitch marker, k2 tog. (2 stitches decreased.) Turn.
Slip first stitch, k1. Turn.
Slip first stitch purlwise, knit second stitch, pass first stitch over second.
The remaining stitch is the first of the next square, if picking up from that point, OR it goes on the crochet hook to begin crochet-hook cast-on for one side of next square.

1705 hrs.
Next side will be three squares, each 18x18.

March 12, 2025

Next side has 88 stitches. 22 goes 4 times evenly into 88.
Next band is 22x22.

March 18, 2025

2200hrs.
Possibly, someday, I just might remember to count more than once!
I just ripped out two 22x22 squares, because the number of stitches along this side is NOT 88, but 98!
So, the next squares will be 14x14.

April 2, 2025

I am seven days into a miserable cold. I haven’t done much knitting; mostly sleeping.
I don’t know just where I am, but this band of squares are 15x15, all seven of them.

The current yarn is a doubled strand of a rather fuzzy yarn that seems not to be listed on Ravelry. Baycrest Sayelle Baby Yarn. 100% acrylic. It’s bag is marked 25g.
No barcode, but it does have CA00234.
The price sticker is for 49¢.
The package does say METRIC, so I’m guessing it dates from the early 1970s.

April 5, 2025

0200 hrs.
Next band of squares will be 17x17. Five of ‘em to use up the 85 stitches along the side.

April 9, 2025

0305 hrs.
This new band will be a few large 26x26 squares, and the yarn is not listed in Ravelry. Phentex (at one time manufactured in both St. Hyacinthe Québec and Plattsburgh, New York) Ragg Time. The full ball became an oversized 1898 Hat. The ball itself came in a mixed bag from Goodwill.

April 14, 2025

Next column of squares might be 15x15. That’s assuming 120 stitches on the side.

April 15, 2025

Fiftieth square done!

Next side is 29x29, doubling up a couple along the too-loose doubled baby yarn near the end.

Added a photo of a bag of assorted unravelled pastel yarns and a small quantity of small baby blue balls. They’ll be next after the current ball of yellow. I don’t remember what I unravelled but it can’t have been very long ago; these hadn’t even moved into the wool room.

April 19, 2025

54th square done.

Next band of mitred squares will be 26x26.

April 22, 2025

Idea: Why not work three balls at once - changing colours at the end of every row?

April 25, 2025

Next column is 140 stitches. Its squares will be 14x14.

Staying with only two colours worked as garter stitch stripes.

May 1, 2025

This line of Squares are 16x16.

May 6, 2025

161 stitches along side.
Evenly divisible by: 7 and 23.

I’ll try 7x7.

TALLY:
1st: 10x10
2nd: 10x10
3rd: 20x20
4th: 30x30
5th through 11th: 10x10
12th and following column: 14x14
3 squares 18x18
14x14
17x17
26x26
29x29
26x26
14x14
16x16
7x7
20x20

May 9, 2025

This time, I don’t even need to calculate! When I had finished placing stitch markers at 20-stitch intervals, there weren’t any extra stitches! So, this column will be 20x20.

180 stitches on this side.
