Notes

This started out as a straight Whispers from the Past CAL, but I’ve decided to use a different color scheme for that blanket. I’ll re-use the four center squares I’ve finished already and the rest of the Paint Box pack for this Around the Bases afghan.

After Week 2 of the WftP CAL, the square would be 110 stitches per side, so I’ll have to modify the last hdc round to not skip the hidden stitch and to add an extra hdc in one corner of each side. (The center square for AtB needs to be a multiple of 6 minus 2, so 6 x 19 - 2 = 112 stitches.)

Expected Stitch Count After Each Inning

--- Starting square: 112

  1. Shell Pillars 123 +11
  2. Popcorns 134 +21
  3. Block Stitch 155 +9
  4. Star Stitch 164 +12
  5. Cross Hatch 176 +6
  6. Back Post Stitch 182 +16
  7. 3x1 Cable Stitch 198 +7
  8. Chained Fences 205 +14
  9. Asian Fans 219 +9
  10. Grannies 228 +9
  11. Moss Stitch 237 +5
  12. Ballpark Fences 242 +9
  13. Homeruns 251 +6
  14. Spiked Stitch 257 +7
  15. V Stitch 264
  16. Fireworks

OK, finished Week 2 today and added pictures. These sure are hippy dippy colors! C’s comment when I showed it to her was, “It looks like a unicorn threw up on it.” Yup, pretty much sums it up.

Finished the first inning. Stitch count is 123 per side. I get a funny craving for Skittles when I work on this blanket. :)

On Row 5, catching the second loop when doing back loop dc is a PITA.

Working on popcorn now! This is kind of slow but fun -- I’ve never worked with two colors at once like this before.

Stitch counts should be:

  • Row 5: 125 (bldc)
  • Row 6: 127 (popcorn)
  • Row 7: 129 (dc)
  • Row 8: 131 (sc)
  • Row 9: 134 (sc)

Finished Inning 2 (pictures added) while waiting for trick-or-treaters who never came. Hope I didn’t get any chocolate on the afghan! :)

14 more Innings to go; I will try to do one or two per month so this doesn’t languish forever. This is a super fun pattern, especially with Esther’s wonderful videos.

Back to this after a hiatus for other projects.

155 stitches at the end of Inning 3, as expected, and I really like the look of the block stitch. I will have to use this as a border on a future blanket. This section was very easy but the next one looks like a challenge! (I’m looking forward to it.)

04-03-2017

I finished Inning 4 today. The star stitches were fun and quite pretty but I’m not sure if my counts are 100% correct on all four sides anymore. (Reminder to self: count before starting Inning 5 and adjust in the corners as required to get to 164.)

04-20-2017

Finished Innng 5 this morning -- it was a very straight-forward section and the stitch count is correct at 176.

For the next inning, which is a lot of back post stitches, I’m going to go with Violet (my darkest color) and Aspen (the bright green) for a nice contrast.

05-02-2017

I finished Inning 6 this morning. My color choices weren’t the best after all (not enough contrast between Violet and Bluebell), but on to 3x1 Cable Stitches! I’ll do Inning 7 Saffron, Shrimp, Pomegranate (yellow, orange, red).

I’m thinking I’ll try to do another inning or two in May as a background project while I finish some other projects. Then I’ll make this my main project in June with the Red Velvet Entrelac blanket as my filler. However, I’ll probably run out of yarn and I’ve decided I do want to finish this whole pattern so I may have to change plans while I wait for a yarn order.

05-15-2017

I am only half-way done with inning 7, the 3x1 Cable Stitches. Very slow and a lot of rounds but a very cool look. I’m rather looking forward to the next inning’s trivial stitch just for a break.

I ordered 6 more skeins of yarn, one of each color, to finish off this project. It may be too much but I was also thinking of doing a Happypotamus (made with African flower hexagons) to go with this as a nice gift for some future baby-child in my life.

05-23-2017

Finished Inning 7 this morning with 198 stitches per side as expected.

05-26-2017

Inning 8 is all done. I had a new thought on this project; I like the size it is now, and with these colors it would really make a great baby blanket. The next inning, Asian Fans, would make a beautiful edge.

So, I’m going to finish off this blanket at Inning 9 and start on the hippo stuffy to go with it with the remaining yarn. I’ll have even more yarn after that, since I just bought the extra skeins, which I think I’ll use for a Sophie’s Garden (which I’ve been itching to try). Maybe I’ll finish that with the last seven innings of AtB for a second baby blanket. Fun!

05-27-2017

Done! I decided to do just the first round of Inning 9 so it wouldn’t be too “fancy” for a baby blanket that might go to a boy or a girl.
