This was my 2nd Bulky Baby Blanket. The first one is still so loved two years later, that it is referred to as “baba” and is always needed to fall asleep. So, it was hard to turn down the request to make another one for baby #2.
I realized after reading another person’s project, the whole problem I had the last time I made this blanket:
Always start a new skein at the edge of the blanket. You can tie a knot, and it gets tucked into the border.

I have attempted the picked up and knit the border several times now. What is difficult is 1) getting an accurate measurement of each side due to the springiness of it 2) my gauge is 2 3/4= 1 inch on the border. My most recent attempt: going with the pattern of a 26x26 blanket (mine was very close to this, depending on the day I measured, ha!) picking up 60 per side.
I divided each side into fourths, with markers, which greatly helped me while picking up and knitting/ eyeballing my way along to get the accurate #.
From Whitney at the PurlBee site:
“You first need to determine the gauge of your border yarn in stockinette stitch. Then multiply the number of stitches per inch by the width of your blanket and pick up that number times along each side (assuming your blanket is square). So if your gauge is 3 stitches = 1 inch and your blanket is 30 inches by 30 inches, you would pick up 3 x 30= 90 stitches along each side (360 stitches total).

I’ve noticed I don’t love the way this yarn holds up to even my gentle blocking. I find it looks worn already- a little fuzzy. I remember thinking the same thing last time, but that time, I put it in the washer (! I’ve learned so much in 2 years!) and figured that was why.
