Notes

I love this cardigan! I’m super pleased with all my modifications.

Primarily used my yarn from Riga, but I bought 2 skeins of different colored Finull for the yoke (the two yarn types are very similar).

The yoke design was a very quick and interesting knit - something new happened on every row, but nothing too challenging, and no long floats! A welcome change from Papilio.

When I discussed the fit issues I had with Ericaneus with the designer she conceptualised it in a way I found very helpful - the sweater was actually too big for me, it’s just that all the “bigness” was concentrated in the back. Therefore I went down a size this time, but moved sts to the front , and it seems to be fitting better now.

Modifications:

  • Cast on with provisional cast on, and started straight on the charts. Knit the neck opening in the same fashion as on Ericaneus, but with some changes, as I wanted the neck to be a little more open: Leave 9 stitches on each side of steek sts on helping needles. Knit 1 row. Row 2: Leave 4 last stitches on helping needles. Row 3: Decrease 10 sts evenly, and leave 4 last stitches on helping needles. Row 4-9: Leave 4 last stitches on helping needles. (when practical the sts left on helping needles also got a w&t) Row 10: In CC1 pick up all stitches and knit the wraps. Knit neck ribbing. Here is the chart I made to help myself (annotations in Norwegian)
  • Different numbers for sleeve division - drastically reducing the number of sts in the back. I basically have the same number of sts over the front and arms as in size M, and then the rest of the sts go in the back. It still ended up being a little “bumpy” in the back. Next time I’ll cut out even more sts.
  • I cast on under arm sts with provisional cast on, and picked them up when I knit the sleeves to completely avoid a seam there.
  • I did the waist decreases with an additional decrease in the back side (decreasing 3 sts under each arm) because my back is pretty small. When increasing I only increased 2 sts under each arm
  • I didn’t decrease before the ribbing at the bottom of the body, because I didn’t see the reason for reducing the circumference right before the widest part of my body.
  • I didn’t really follow the instructions for sleeve decreases, I am just winging it. Before the elbow I decreased one time for every repeat of fleas (about every 8 row). Then I didn’t do any decreases for a while, and finished up with some decreases as I approached the ribbing. Ended up with 4 sts more than recommended for the ribbing, so it seems I ended up pretty much on target.
  • One row buttonhole over 3 sts, 11 buttons total. Buttonholes on row 3 (of 10) to make them centered in the middle of the buttonband when stretched by wear.
  • I was exactly on gauge before washing, but since I found the sweater to be a little large in all directions (width and length), washed it and tumble dried it for 47 (!!) minutes (I checked it every couple of minutes, I didn’t forget it), it shrank just a little and now fits me very well. The listed gauge is after shrinking.
  • Cut steek without crocheting. Sewed on ribbon over the cut steek sts. Because I wanted all the steek sts to be covered by the ribbon I trimmed them down, so only 1.5 steek sts remained on each side. Learned a painful lesson: Once one ribbon is in place and looks right, the other ribbon should be measured against the first on to ensure the fronts become symmetrical.

Progress
April: I knit swatches to decide on color composition in the pattern, and also to practice the knotted steek (link to tutorial).
Oct 12th: Cast on the actual sweater. I am using a mix of the two swatches. Decided to go with an ordinary steek after all.
Oct 18th: Divided for sleeves, and it seems to fit! Wohoo!
Oct 30th: Bound off body
Nov: Sleeves are not my favourite part of sweater knitting. Knitting the sleeves with magic loop as always, but it’s going slow.
Dec: Still sleeve knitting. I have only reached the elbow, I will have to put in a concerted effort to get these done soon!
Dec 21st: So close! Ran out of yarn a few cm away from the ends of the sleeves. I will buy some Finull yarn to supplement after Christmas.
Dec/Jan: Bought new yarn, did a few rows of alternating old and new yarn.
Jan 1st: Moved to San Francisco (nothing to do with the cardigan, really).
Jan 16th: Stayed up late and finished ribbing on the sleeve. Starting to see the end of this project, now.
Jan 18th: Got buttons at Britex (near Union Square). Great place! Also finished shortrows and ribbing in the neck.
Jan 23rd: Bound off last button band, weaved in last yarn end.
Jan 25th: Sewed on ribbon in the back. One ribbon was way longer than the other, making the front asymmetrical. Had a small tantrum and ripped out the too-long-ribbon, measured it against the perfect-length-ribbon and started sewing it on again.
Jan 26th: Finally finished second ribbon. Started sewing in buttons, realised I had made 12 buttonholes for my 11 buttons. Had a small tantrum and ripped out the button band, and knit it up with the right number of buttonholes. Sewed in the 5 middle buttons, so it could be worn, went to bed.
Jan 27th: Wore the sweater to work, sewed in the last buttons in a break. Finally done!
