I can’t believe it’s time for my annual Christmas ornament making time.
Although it has been an awful year for everyone and I for one have been shielding for the longest time, it has surprisingly gone very fast indeed.
This year I’m making a Tin Soldier/Drummer ornament. I originally intended making a Nutcracker, but I wasn’t happy with him, so I changed my mind.
I think I will start with a combination of my previous ornaments, Father Christmas and Snowman for size and stitches needed.
The pattern has taken a little longer than I anticipated, but I think I’m there now.
I have just one more run through to make sure I am pleased with him and then I’ll start making the components.
This year I have timed how long each component and joining section took.
To make one soldier from start to finish took me 90 minutes, so in total I spent 150 hours which equates to 6 and a quarter days.
I’ve finished these early this year which has surprised me, as it took me longer to perfect the pattern and I have made some baby blankets in between, so not bad going.
I wasn’t very pleased with them at first, but once I had the drum in place and the little chin strap I was finally happy with my little tin soldiers.
The first one has left today to be sent to the Netherlands to my Nephew and his family.
Note to self: Used 2.20mm hook.
