Notes

January gnome for the Year of Gnomes KAL

Yarn is from the “Not All Who Wander” marionette set.

Gnombleberry will become St. Francis.

St. Francis

Instead of following the C1-C4 color designations in the pattern, I chose the colors by gnome part.

These are all from the “Not All Who Wander” marionette set by Marianated yarns:

Hat - Sandstorm
Body mc - Hive Mind
Body garter stripes - Dune
Beard - Fieldstone
Nose & hands - Dune
Hat pocket - Maple Pecan
Backpack- Buzz Lightbeer

Other yarn:
Grassy bush - Black Sheep Dyeworks, Moss tonal
Wolf - Madelinetosh, Rainwater
Bluebird - scrap piece of Patons North Kroy Socks Ragg Shades, Blue brown marl
Flowers - scraps of madelinetosh and black sheep dyeworks

I included lots of animals as St. Francis is patron saint of animals. A bird button is sewn onto the hat as though she is standing on the edge of the hat pocket. Grassy bush and animal buttons are sewn onto the bottom edge (grass knitted as border piece in mostly seed stitch with a varied picot edge and then folded up before sewing on).

The tamed wolf of Gubbio sits in his backpack.

He has a knotted rosary. The wooden Franciscan cross on it is from the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. I brought it home when I went to Assisi during seminary.

The three knots in his corded belt represent the vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity.

St. Francis received the stigmata 2 years before his death while in prayer. He kept the marks hidden during the remainder of his life, so I kept the knitted marks subtle.

The flowers in his hat pocket are native to Mount Subasio, the location of St. Francis’ hermitage. The flowers are narcissus poetica and the Anacamptis Pyramidalis wild orchid.
The flowers were improvisationally knit. Stems are crochet chain. Orchid is a triangle of seed stitch sewn together into a cone. Narcissus is a crochet chain sewn together into petals with yellow stitched into the center. The flowers are also embroidered into the grassy bush using french knots.
