The pattern, like all overlay crochet needs concentration and counting.

If you don’t count, you will not succeed.
The pattern is well written and clear. You just have to ensure that you do exactly what the words say. Don’t query or question. Just do it and it will work.
I used the back as per the pattern using my teal colours but found that I needed an extra round for my 16” cushion pad. To join I used the method detailed by Emma Lamb in her book ‘Crochet Home’, in which you create a button flap and some holes, dc the lot together. I really don’t like sewing so I avoid it like the plague. With this method I only had to sew on some buttons.
