The original Random Squares Throw was just not working for me. Using 2 strands of yarn the square was unattractively bulky and dimensions turned out undersize. But using 1 strand of course was puny, and I didn’t think the motif was pretty enough to bother adding rows to get to 8 inches. I decided to try an entirely different 8-inch square that uses 1 strand, has a 3-D quality, and is really pretty: Priscilla Hewitt’s Circle of Friends square. It’s pleasant and simple to crochet, and will make a classy throw.

I followed the pattern instructions for assembly (whipstitch) but I changed the border. I did: Round 1: SC all around, with 3 SC in each corner. Round 2: Ch2, turn, HDC around, with HDC, ch2, HDC in each corner. Repeat Round 2. Fasten off.

My finished afghan measures 42 x 56 inches. My squares turned out to be only about 6 1/2 inches.
